Privacy: what data this site keeps about you
What This Site Does With Your Data
There is no cookie banner on this site because there is nothing to consent to - our analytics are self-hosted and set no cookies.

What we do not do
- No advertising and no ad networks.
- No third-party analytics. No Google Analytics, no Facebook pixel, no social embeds, no heatmapping, no session recording. We do count page views, and the paragraph below says exactly how.
- No tracking cookies. Nothing follows you off this site, and our analytics are configured to set no cookies at all.
- No accounts, no newsletter, no sign-in. There is nothing to register for, so there is nothing to leak.
- We do not sell, share or trade anything, because there is nothing to sell.
The site runs a strict Content Security Policy that blocks scripts from any origin other than this one and our own analytics host, which means a third-party script could not execute even if one were injected.
Analytics
We count page views with Matomo, which we run on our own server. That is the whole of it, and two things follow from it that are worth stating plainly:
- The data never reaches an analytics company. Matomo is software we host, not a service we send you to. There is no vendor on the other end of it, nothing is resold, and no profile of you is built anywhere.
- It is configured to set no cookies. Matomo normally drops a pair of first-party cookies to recognise a returning visitor; we switch that off. Nothing is written to your device, which is why there is still no cookie banner on this site - there is genuinely nothing to consent to. The cost is ours: we cannot tell a returning reader from a new one, and we would rather lose that number than ask you to dismiss a dialog.
What it records is the ordinary server-side picture: which page was requested, roughly when, a truncated IP address, the referring page and the browser's general type. It is used to find out which recipes people actually cook and which pages are broken, and for nothing else.
The analytics host sits behind a content delivery network, which handles the request in transit the way a CDN handles any request. We mention it because this page lists everything that touches your data, and a list with a gap in it is not worth reading.
What is stored, and where
Three things, and all three live in your own browser using local storage. They never reach our servers and we cannot read them:
| What | Why | How to clear it |
|---|---|---|
| Your preferred measurement system | So a metric cook does not click "metric" on every recipe | Clear site data in your browser |
| Ticked ingredients on a recipe | So the list survives a page refresh mid-cook | The "clear the ticks" button on the recipe |
| Nothing else | - | - |
Server logs
Our web server keeps standard access logs - IP address, timestamp, the URL requested, the browser's user-agent string - for operational and security purposes. They are not used to build a profile of anyone, are not shared, and are rotated and deleted on a short cycle.
Cookies
The site sets one cookie, and only if you sign in to the private operations dashboard, which is not something a reader can do. Ordinary browsing of this site sets no cookies at all - including the analytics described above, which run in a cookieless mode for exactly that reason.
Contact and email
If you email us through the contact page, we keep that email in order to reply to it. We do not add you to anything, because there is nothing to be added to.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR and equivalent law elsewhere you have rights to access, correct and erase personal data held about you. In practice we hold almost none: unless you have emailed us, there is nothing to access, correct or erase. If you have, write to us and we will deal with it.
Children
This is a cooking site with no accounts and no data collection. It is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes materially - particularly if the site ever introduces advertising, or analytics that identify you - the change will be stated plainly at the top of this page and the date below will change. It will not be slipped in.
Changed on 21 September 2026: we added self-hosted, cookieless Matomo to count page views, and rewrote the section above to describe it. Saying so here is the promise in this section being kept, not an exception to it. Nothing about what is stored on your device changed, and no third party gained access to anything.
