Chicken, bacon, egg mayonnaise and tomato on soft malted bread. Fifteen minutes if the chicken is already cooked, and…
Pret's mayonnaise-bound fillings are looser than home versions, and this is the single biggest difference. More mayonnaise than feels sensible, whisked with a little lemon juice before the tuna or chicken goes in, so that it coats every piece rather than binding some of it into clumps and leaving the rest dry. Under-dressing is why a home version tastes worthy rather than nice.
The bread is a soft malted brown or a seeded wholemeal. Not sourdough, not plain white, and never crusty. The bread is there to hold the filling and disappear, which is the opposite of what a good bakery loaf is designed to do.
Herbs go in generously and raw. Fresh coriander, basil and chives are doing a great deal of the flavour work, and they go in at the last moment - Pret's kitchens assemble in the morning for that day only, which is a luxury a long-life sandwich does not have and a home kitchen does.
Everything is seasoned, including the vegetables. A pinch of salt on sliced tomato and cucumber before they go in is a small thing that is obvious by its absence.
Pret A Manger is the British high-street lunch, and the reason it appears on this site is arithmetic rather than cooking. A sandwich and a coffee every working day is a four-figure annual sum, and almost nothing in a Pret sandwich is technically difficult - it is good bread, generous filling and a dressing made that morning.
The company's model is built on making everything in the shop each day and giving away what is left at closing, which is genuinely unusual in food retail and is why the food tastes fresher than the format suggests it should. It is also why the menu rotates constantly and why the item you liked has often disappeared.
What is worth writing down are the components people cannot quite place. The dressing on the chicken and avocado - lemon, herbs and considerably more mayonnaise than looks sensible. The way the tuna mayonnaise is bound, loose rather than clumped, because it is whisked with lemon juice before the tuna goes in. The cheddar and pickle, where the pickle is doing more work than the cheese.
None of it is difficult and all of it depends on quantity: Pret's fillings are more generously dressed than a home cook's instinct, and under-dressing is the commonest reason a home version tastes worthy rather than nice.

The same item, priced from each country’s own menu and converted to one currency so the columns can be read against each other. Only items Pret A Manger prices in at least 5 of the markets we hold are listed, because a row with three figures in it is a gap rather than a comparison.
